Holidays in Lefkas combine secluded untouched beaches, hidden coves, peaceful rural villages and modern tourist resorts. As one of the Ionian Islands, Lefkas lies just off the west coast of the Greek mainland. Holidays in Lefkas are not complete without a visit to the island's capital. Lefkas Town lies on the northern tip of the island, and is home to colourful houses, Venetian churches, museums and a main square. Tourists can relax over a coffee in the square and visit the 13th-century Santa Mavra fortress.
The island's main tourist resorts are set along the east coast, with its beautiful beaches, pretty offshore islands and excellent sailing conditions. One of the most popular of the island's resorts is Nidri. Set at the mouth of Vylcho Bay, Nidri features long, narrow beaches, which have a tendency to become overcrowded, and a good selection of bars, cafes and tavernas. A popular excursion from Nidri is the spectacular Vafkeri Waterfall. Nearby Nidri are the quieter villages of Perigiali, Lygia, and Nikiana with their pebble and shingle beaches surrounded by rolling hillsides.
Holidays in Lefkas are also based along the south and west coasts of the island. The west coast offers wild scenery with rugged cliffs, rocky outcrops and rougher seas. Along this west coast is Agios Nikitas, one of the most attractive resorts along this stretch of coast, Milos with its fine sandy beach and hidden caves, and Kathisma with its wide sand and pebble beach stretching over a kilometre in length. On the south side of Lefkas is Mount Stavrotas, the highest point on the island, the resort of Vasiliki with its wealth of water sports, and the traditional village of Poros with its charming old houses and narrow streets.
